SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- The Tennessee men's golf team got off to a quick start Monday at the Gifford Collegiate in San Martin, Calif. The Vols shot even-par 355 on the day to sit in third heading into the second round.
Senior Rick Lamb paced UT with a 2-under par 69 card, with five birdies to wrap up the day in a tie for fifth. Freshman Chad Merzbacher and senior Jay Vandeventer follow in a tie for 13th after shooting even-par 71. Rounding out the Vols' scores in the first round were freshman Mike Nagy and junior Marshall Talkington who finished 1-over par 72 to be tied for 23rd place. At 2-over par 73, sophomore Thomas Dunne is in a tie for 31st.
Fifth-ranked UCLA leads the field after rounding out the day at 5-under 350. No. 17 Stanford sits two strokes off the lead with a 2-under par 353 card. Trailing UT in fourth place is Coastal Carolina at 7-over (362). Northwestern and San Jose State are knotted in a tie for fifth with 363, while SMU (365), USC (366), Oregon State (371) and Lamar (373) round out the competition in the seventh through 10th slots.
Tuesday's second round begins at 8:30 as the Vols will be paired with SMU and Stanford and start from the 13th tee.
