Jay Vandeventer led the Volunteers on their final day of play at the Windon Memorial Golf Classic in Glencoe, Ill. The senior shot a 4-over par (75) Sunday, but rebounded Monday with rounds of 74 and 72 (221) to finish the tournament in 14th place.
The final day at Skokie Country Club saw solid finishes from some of Tennessee's newest golfers. Thomas Dunne and Michael Nagy both had strong tournaments. Dunne, a sophomore transfer from Northern Illinois, finished the tournament tied for 15th place with a total score of 222. Nagy, a freshman from Manistique, Mich., was the definition of consistency after shooting 4-over par (75) all three rounds of the tournament to finish tied for 23rd.
The Vols finished the team portion of the tournament tied for 5th place. During the second round of play, the Vols climbed as high as 3rd place before dropping into a tie for 5th with a total score of 890 (+38).
A team's tournament score is figured by taking four of the five best individual scores from each round and totaling them together.
After tough competition and suspended play, the Windon Memorial concluded Monday night with the crowning of an individual and team champion. Ohio State University claimed the team championship after defeating Northwestern by one-stroke.
Northwestern's John Callahan captured the individual championship by holding off Coastal Carolina's Ben Wheeler. Wheeler made three-straight birdies to end his day, including holing out from a green-side bunker on his 54th hole to tie Callahan atop the standings. However, Callahan responded with a 25-foot birdie putt on his final hole to clinch the championship by one-stroke.
Additionally, DePaul's Moritz Ackerhans aced the 193-yard par-3 fifth hole on Monday. It is the third-straight year the Windon Memorial has had a hole-in-one.
