Rick Lamb's best day of his young Tennessee golfing career wasn't nearly enough to offset a disappointing Vols afternoon and weekend in Durham, N.C.
Sunday's tournament scores were the highest of the two days at the Rod Myers Invitational, and UT contributed to those numbers. Tennessee had its worst round of the season by eight strokes, swelling to an 18-over-par 306 Sunday that dropped the Vols into seventh place at 37-over 901.
Eight of the 11 teams on Sunday either matched or exceeded their worst team rounds of the weekend, and course statistics showed an average final round score of 76.78.
Tennessee entered this event riding plenty of momentum off a second-place finish at the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate. The Vols had slipped into the top 10 rankings in two of the three major polls.
Duke rallied on both the team and individual fronts to claim both trophies. The host Blue Devils fired a Sunday-best 286 to finish at 3-under-par 861, nine strokes clear of second-place Baylor's 870. Charlotte dropped to third at 872. Duke's Julian Suri was the only player with a final-round in the 60s, shooting 68 to claim medalist honors at 5-under 211.
Solid UT Debut
Lamb made it around the Duke University Golf Club in 72 strokes, staying at 10 over par for the tournament and improving to a tie for 29th place at 226. The Sarasota, Fla., native played his first rounds for UT this weekend after transferring over the summer from Santa Clara.
The lefthander balanced four bogeys and a double-bogey against six birdies, closing with a pair of birdies over his final three holes.
Garrick Porteous shot 75 and held on to a tie for 17th place at 5-over 221. Porteous and the Vols began play at No. 10 and, after trading a bogey for a birdie on his first two holes, triple-bogeyed the 12th. But the senior steadied to play his final 15 holes in even par, with two bogeys and two birdies.
Danny Keddie's scorecard for the weekend was 72-75-78. Sunday's round featured five bogeys over his first nine holes, followed by a double-bogey at the par-4 second. Birdies at Nos. 6 and 9 sandwiched one final bogey and the sophomore finished in a tie for 24th place at 9-over 225.
Tough Stretch
Jay Vandeventer and Marshall Talkington had matching 81s to close out the Tennessee scoring.
Talkington was battling at 5 over for the day through 14 holes when he suffered a three-hole stretch of bogey-double-double. The sophomore salvaged a closing birdie at the par-5 ninth to finish in a tie for 51st place at 18-over 234.
Vandeventer suffered through two triples and a double over his first nine holes, leading to a 46. The junior rallied for a pair of birdies on the second nine to finish the tournament in 55th place at 19-over 235.
Playing as an individual, Darren Renwick closed with 79 after being hurt by consecutive double-bogeys on holes 18 and 1. The senior carded three birdies for the day and finished in a tie for 51st place at 18-over 234.
UT returns to action Oct. 14-16 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in nearby Jonesborough.
