Tennessee didn't get the final-day push it wanted and fell to eighth place Sunday at the SEC Men's Golf Championship on St. Simons Island, Ga.
The Vols combined for 13-over-par 293 to finish the tournament at 21-over 861. Garrick Porteous and Jay Vandeventer led the UT effort by sharing 22nd place at 6-over 216 on the individual leaderboard, with Vandeventer earning the best finish of his young Vols career.
Georgia survived a third-round push from Florida and Mississippi to claim its second straight SEC title and league-leading 28th conference crown. The Bulldogs closed with a three-day total of 844 to win by five shots over the Gators and Rebels, who tried to rally with matching 3-under 277s on Sunday.
Georgia's Russell Henley won the individual title in a sudden-death playoff over South Carolina's George Bryan IV. Both finished at 6-under-par 204, with Henley sinking a birdie putt on the second playoff hole to claim medalist honors.
Vandeventer shot 72 to lead Tennessee for the second day in a row despite double-bogeying No. 18. The Bristol freshman had one birdie and one bogey on each nine before his 6 on the par-4, 470-yard finishing hole.
Darren Renwick was next with 73. The sophomore answered his double bogey at the third with his lone birdie of the day at No. 4. Twelve straight pars followed before Renwick closed with bogeys at Nos. 16 and 18 for a tournament score of 7-over-par 217 and a tie for 26th place.
Porteous carded a 74 when he, too, had trouble at No. 18. That bogey was his fifth of the day against three birdies and a double at the par-3 third.
David Holmes also shot 74 after doubling the difficult par-4 16th. The senior captain had a pair of bogeys on each side, balanced somewhat by birdies at the seventh and 15th holes. Holmes tied for 32nd place at 8-over-par 218.
Robin Wingardh closed with 77 and out of the scoring for the second straight day. Two double bogeys along with a pair of bogeys on each side were more than enough to offset the junior's single birdie at the 10th hole. Wingardh tied for 38th place at 10-over-par 220.
Tennessee now awaits its fate on an NCAA regional bid. This year's regionals take place May 20-22 at six sites: Alpharetta, Ga.; Bremerton, Wash.; College Station, Texas; New Haven, Conn.; San Diego and South Bend, Ind. The top five teams from each regional then advance to the NCAA Championships, set for June 2-5 at The Honors Course in Ooltewah.
