Patrick Reaches Main Draw at Regionals

Tennessee sophomore Taylor Patrick won two matches in straight sets Thursday to join four teammates in the main draw at the ITA Ohio Regional Championships in Lexington, Ky.
Patrick defeated ETSU's Robin Akser 6-4, 6-0 to start the morning qualifying. He later picked up his team-leading 10th win of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Wright State's Evan Neuman in the second round to advance to the main draw.
Patrick, a Knoxville native, has a 10-3 record through four tournaments this fall, already surpassing his freshman season total of 9-9.
Junior Bryan Swartz and freshman Colton Norton both lost in the first round of singles qualifying. Swartz dropped a three-set match for the first time this season, falling 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to Blandon MacDonald of Xavier. Norton lost 6-1, 6-1 to ETSU's Jeremy Bonnevalle.
Main draw competition begins Friday with two rounds of doubles and the opening round of singles. Three Vols are seeded in singles: senior John-Patrick Smith at No. 1, Rhyne Williams at No. 5 and Tennys Sandgren at No. 9. Sophomore Edward Jones is also competing in the singles draw, along with Patrick.
Smith and Sandgren, playing together for the first time, are the No. 2 seed in doubles.
