Tennessee closed the fall portion of its 2009-10 schedule Sunday with a fifth-place showing at the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
The Vols shot 3-over-par 291 to finish at 3-under 861 for the two-day event. Georgia Tech registered a Sunday-best 279 to finish with a tournament-record score of 21-under-par 843, seven shots clear of second-place Virginia (850). Michigan (853) and Augusta State (854) were next, with North Carolina (864) in sixth place behind Tennessee.
UT was led by Darren Renwick and Robin Wingardh, who were among a group in 15th place at 2-under-par 214. Renwick closed with a 70 Sunday for his best round of the weekend, while Wingardh finished with 74.
Jay Vandeventer also shot 74 to finish even par in a tie for 26th -- best showing of his young career -- while David Holmes closed with 73 to finish alone in 29th. Justin Walker's 78 left him in a tie for 74th at 14 over par.
Tennessee closed its fall slate with two first-place trophies for the first time since fall 2004. Head coach Jim Kelson's squad moved earlier this year to No. 1 in the nation as ranked by Golfweek/Sagarin and is well positioned inside the top 15 in all major polls heading into spring play. The Vols' next tournament is Feb. 14-16 at Battle of the Beach in Newport Coast, Calif.
Renwick's weekend began with a pair of 72s on Saturday. The sophomore matched his six birdies with six bogeys and never was more than one stroke above or below par for the entire 36 holes. Sunday, Renwick opened with a bogey at the first but then birdied Nos. 2 and 6 before giving one back at the eighth and returning to level par. He answered a birdie at the 11th with a bogey on No. 15, but then capped his weekend with birdies at the longest par-3 (No. 17, 223 yards) and longest par-5 (No. 18, 578 yards) on the course.
In four tournaments, Renwick is tied for the team lead with eight rounds of par or better and is second on the squad with a 71.83 stroke average. His 67 in the second round at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate is a team low for the fall.
Wingardh fashioned nine birdies in his 36 holes Saturday against only five bogeys. The junior shot 71 in his opening round and then 69 in the finale, birdieing four of his final eight holes. Sunday, Wingardh was 1 under par after a birdie at the seventh. He answered bogeys at Nos. 8 and 9 with birdies at the next two, but then closed with three bogeys over his final seven holes.
For the fall, Wingardh leads UT with a 71.67 stroke average. He is tied with Renwick with eight rounds of par or better and two top-10 finishes. His low for the fall season was a 68 at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
Vandeventer was 2 under par after Saturday's 36 holes, shooting 70-72. The freshman bogeyed his very first hole, but played solid throughout with a combined six birdies against only three more bogeys. Sunday's round saw bogeys at the second and seventh holes move him to 2 over par. The Bristol product birdied No. 11 and then closed with a bogey to finish even par and tied for 26th place -- his best score (216) by six strokes and his best finish by 14 places.
In three tournaments, Vandeventer has three rounds of par or better, including his 69 on the final day at the Carpet Capital. His stroke average improved to 74.22.
Holmes was at even par after Saturday's 36 holes, compiling three bogeys in his opening 75 but bouncing back with two birdies and his first eagle of the season to highlight the nightcap 69. Sunday, the Knoxville senior traded birdies and bogeys throughout before closing with a 1-over-par 73.
His four tournaments have resulted in a 72.58 stroke average, five rounds of par or better and a top-10 finish at the Carpet Capital.
Walker's play dropped off this weekend but didn't diminish an outstanding fall for the Springfield sophomore. A combined six Saturday birdies were not enough to overcome three double bogeys en route to his 77-75. Sunday, Walker recorded just one birdie against four bogeys along with a triple at the par-5 fourth.
Walker finished the fall with a 75.25 stroke average over 12 tournaments and a personal collegiate-best 70 fired in the opening round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
