Freshman Christian Hansen won his third consecutive singles match as play ended Sunday at the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.
Hansen, playing in his first collegiate tournament as a Vol, dropped two singles matches and a doubles match Friday but the freshman did not lose again the rest of the tournament. The Cologne, Germany native dropped Duke's Dylan Arnould, 3-6, 6-2, (12-10) Sunday in his final match of the back draw at the Invitational. The win was Hansen's third consecutive and ties him with John-Patrick Smith for the most wins by a UT player at the tournament.
Smith rebounded from his upset Saturday in singles to win both of his matches in the back draw. The 10th-ranked Vol defeated Old Dominion's Tobias Fanselow, 6-3, 6-1. Smith finished the tournament with a 3-1 singles record.
In doubles, Smith teamed up with Davey Sandgren to advance to the finals of the A-3 doubles draw. In the finals, the UT duo fell to 31st-anked Dominic Inglot and Michael Shabaz of Virginia, 8-5. Sandgren and Smith were doubles partners last fall and went 7-3, this fall they are off to a 2-1 start.
Boris Conkic fell to Virginia's Houston Barrick, ranked 75th, 2-6, 7-6, (10-7) in the third place match of the A-2 singles draw. The UT sophomore went 2-2 at the UVA Invitational.
Fellow sophomore, Matteo Fago was defeated in his final match of the tournament, 6-2, 6-0 by 75th-ranked Nico Delgado of Virginia Tech.
The Vols return to action next weekend when the team begins play in the D'Novo All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
