September 14, 2008 | Men's Golf
Sept. 14, 2008
The No. 10 Tennessee men's golf team shot its best round of the weekend, a 1-under-par 287, and jumped two spots to finish in second place at the 20th annual Carpet Capital Collegiate, which concluded Sunday at The Farm in Rocky Face, Ga. The Volunteers finished with a tournament scorecard of 294-288-287--869, 5 over par.
"We were real proud of the way our team played this week," Tennessee coach Jim Kelson said. "It is always good when you can finish towards the top in a field that is as competitive as the Carpet Capital."
No. 12 Chattanooga took home the team championship at even par, edging the Vols by only five strokes. No. 14 South Carolina finished third, six strokes back of first with No. 13 Clemson and No. 7 Florida rounding out the top five.
"We played fairly well," Kelson said. "We had a disastrous hole yesterday that really kind of hurt us but we were able to bounce back from that and play well after that on the backside yesterday. All day today we hung in there and played well and they did a good job. It is nice to get off to a really good start this season."
Senior Chris Paisley was the top finisher for the Volunteers. The England native finished tied for fourth with three other players. Paisley ended the tournament at 2-under-par 214, his best round a 3-under-par 69 in the first.
Sophomore Robin Wingardh made the biggest move on the final day, jumping 18 spots to finish tied for 13th. Wingardh turned in his best performance of the weekend, a 2-under-par 70 after collecting four birdies, three on the front nine.
Newcomer Darren Renwick also shot his best round of the tournament on Sunday, a 2-under-par 70, earning him a tie for 20th place. Renwick scattered five birdies on the day while carding par-or-better on 15 of 18 holes.
Junior David Holmes was next for UT tied for 30th place. Holmes fired a 2-over-par 72 in the final round and finished the tournament at 4 over par. The highlight of the round for Holmes was an eagle on No. 12.
Junior James Brannen rounded out the Tennessee lineup. Brannen finished 87th after shooting a weekend-best 3-over-par 75 in the final round. The Clarksville native matched his teammate Holmes for shot of the round with an eagle of his own on 12.
Next up for the Volunteers is the PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational, Sept. 28-30 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. The Inverness Club is the site for the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships.
