Vols Advance At Southern Intercollegiate

The Tennessee men???s tennis team had two singles players and two doubles teams advance on the second day of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Davey Sandgren defeated former teammate Derek Stephens, now at North Carolina State, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the Round of 16. Stephens was a member of the Vols from 2005-07. In the Round of 16, Sandgren fell to Phillipe Frayssinoux of Mississippi State 6-1, 6-3.
Freshman J.P. Smith started his day with a straight-set win over Mahmoud Hamed of South Florida. In the Round of 16, the Australia native fell to Louisville???s Austen Child 6-4, 6-2.
Chris Racz, ranked 84th in singles, fell to South Alabama???s Marek Sramek, ranked 24th, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 in his opening match on Saturday.
Freshman Jeremy Tweedt lost his second round match to Joao Paoliello of Middle Tennessee 6-4, 6-4 in Division II.
The Vols won two of their three doubles matches Saturday. Sandgren and Smith combined to defeat Gvelesiani and Smith of Georgia 8-5 in the Division I bracket. Matt Brewer and Tweedt dropped their match in Division I to Parr/Salmon of Wake Forest 8-1. William Lang and Racz defeated Camacho and Clos of Louisville 8-5 in Division II doubles to advance.
The third day of competition is scheduled to begin Sunday at 8 a.m.
