The Tennessee men's golf team ended the first round of the 2007 NCAA Championships in 12th place Wednesday at the Golden Horse Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
The 10th-seeded Vols fired a 4-over-par 284, nine strokes behind Stanford, which leads the 30-team field at 5 under par. Coastal Carolina is in second at 3-under. Florida, Minnesota, and Texas are tied for third.
"We did not play particularly well today but I thought we did a good job of grinding out a decent round," coach Jim Kelson said. "For not having our best stuff, we are in decent position to move forward and move up."
The second round begins Thursday at 8 a.m. Eastern Time. Pairings for the final two rounds will be based on the standings at the completion of play on Thursday. The field will be cut to the top 15 teams and six individuals after 54 holes.
Charlie Ford had the best score of the day for the Vols with a 1-under-par 69. Ford was 3 under through nine after two birdies and an eagle on No. 8 before three bogeys on the back nine hurt his score. The junior enters the second round tied for 15th.

Senior Tino Weiss shot a 4-over par 74 to sit tied for 107th after the first round. He was hurt by three bogeys and a double bogey on the day. Freshman David Holmes rounded out the Tennessee lineup in 155th place after a10-over-par 80.
Kingston native Jonathan Mount, the Vols' leading scorer this season, withdrew before competition began Wednesday morning after it was determined that his knee would not allow him to complete the round.
