The Tennessee men's tennis team got back on track Sunday defeating Arkansas 7-0 at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center.
"The team did a great job today rebounding from a tough loss on Friday," head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "They turned this into a positive weekend with the great result today. Anytime you can beat a SEC opponent 7-0, you've played some very good tennis."
Tennessee (7-3, 1-1 SEC) won the doubles point for the eighth time this season. Kaden Hensel and Derek Stephens, playing doubles for the first time together this season, defeated Jorge Villanueva and Dmitry Vlaskin 8-2 at the No. 2 position. Davey Sandgren and Kiril Tcherveniachki won the doubles point for UT with a come-from-behind 8-6 victory at court No. 3 over Gabriel Mattos and Bradwin Williams. The Vols' Adam Hubble and Ben Rogers fell for the first time in doubles dual-match play, 8-5 to Colin Mascall and Blake Strode at No. 1 doubles.
Stephens proved he had put Friday's heartbreaking loss behind him with an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory over Vlaskin at the No. 3 position. Stephens is now 19-9 this season in singles.
"I was very happy for Derek," Winterbotham said. "He lost a heartbreaker on Friday but rebounded today with a great doubles and singles performance."
Rogers won at No. 4 singles to give UT a 3-0 lead. The UT senior defeated Dmitry Lebedev 7-5, 6-2. Rogers went 3-1 this weekend with his only loss coming today in doubles. The Kingsport native is 8-2 this season in dual-match singles.
Sandgren clinched the match for UT moments later with a hard-fought 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Mascall at No. 2 singles. Sandgren, who also had fallen in a three-set match on Friday, this time, could not be beaten leading to his 11th win this season in a three-set matches.
Hensel extended UT's lead with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win over Strode at the No. 1 position. Hensel had a great weekend in singles, defeating two ranked opponents in three-set matches.
Tcherveniachki dominated at No. 5 singles to give Tennessee a 6-0 lead. The UT senior barely had time to break a sweat defeating Williams 6-0, 6-1.
Hubble rounded out the UT sweep with a 6-3 win over Villanueva at No. 6 singles.
Tennessee heads to the road for only the second time this season when it travels to Gainesville Friday for a match with the 13th-ranked Florida Gators.
