June 09, 2026 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Knoxville native and Tennessee men's tennis standout Jose Garcia was announced Tuesday as the ITA's Most Improved Player in the Ohio Valley Region.Â
Â
The sophomore truly took the next step this year, moving up to play on courts one and two primarily after solely playing on court three his freshman season. Garcia was lethal at No. 2, carding a 5-1 record that included a victory over then-No. 86 Billy Blaydes from Auburn.Â
Â
"We are all very proud of Jose," UT Head Coach Chris Woodruff said. "His desire to not only learn but actually apply his knowledge to match situations explains why he won this honor. I know he expects to keep reaching these new levels with his tennis."
Â
The homegrown talent achieved a great deal in his second year on Rocky Top, logging his first and highest ITA singles ranking of 76th. The ranking came after he went on a career-long seven-match win streak in singles, including his first-ever ranked win against Kentucky's Jack Loutit, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, then-ranked No. 38 nationally.Â
Â
This is Garcia's first regional performance award, and he joins a long list of Vols to be recognized by the ITA. He also was tabbed on the 2025-26 SEC Community Service Team.
