Smith Advances at ITA All-American Championships

Tennessee freshman tennis player J.P. Smith defeated the nation's 70th-ranked singles player Monday to advance to the second round of the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Championships played in Tulsa, Okla.

Smith, ranked 108th, defeated Jean-Yves Aubone of Florida State in a third-set tiebreaker to advance to the second round. The UT freshman from Townsville, Australia won the first set and after dropping the second rebounded in the third to force a tiebreaker and eventually outlasted the Seminole to win 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(1).

The Vol netter faces Ed Corrie of Texas in the second round of qualifying Tuesday. Smith needs to win two more matches to join teammate Chris Racz in the 64-man main draw.

Davey Sandgren lost his first round match to Drexel's Omar Laalej 6-4, 6-4.

Sandgren and Smith begin qualifying for doubles Tuesday with a match against Reid Carleton and Kiril Dimitrov of Duke.
