TWO VOLS IN QUARTERFINALS AT SOUTHERN INTERCOLLEGIATES

Athens, Ga. - The Tennessee men's tennis team continued its strong play at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships Saturday with David Baxendine and Kiril Tcherveniachki both winning two singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals.
"We had another good day today," head coach Chris Mahony said. "Dave and Kiril had two good wins each and we are looking forward to them both advancing far into the tournament. Johnny had a great win this morning and I was very happy with the way everybody competed."
Baxendine started his day off with a come-from-behind victory over Florida's Stefan Tell 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. In the afternoon, the UT senior dropped Michele Panzeri of Tennessee Tech 6-3, 6-3. Baxendine faces South Carolina, Upstate's Predrag Burmazovic in the quarterfinals.
Kiril Tcherveniachki defeated IIIie Babinciuc of Southeastern Louisiana 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the round-of-16 where he met Shaun Young of Florida. The UT junior was then able to get past the Gator freshman, winning 7-6, 6-3. Tcherveniachki faces another SEC opponent Ole Miss's Christopher Rea in the quarterfinals.
Johnny Thornton despite surrendering the first set to Mercer's Nathan Starr was able to come-from-behind and win 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Thornton was not able to capture his next three-match set though as he fell to Georgia State's Clarence Boyd 6-7, 6-1, 6-1. Rawl Martin lost his first match Saturday to Jacek Twarowski of Georgia State 7-5, 2-6, 7-6.
Bobby Cameron and Kaden Hensel both play in the Division I consolation singles bracket Sunday. Cameron faces Tennessee Tech's Shunsuke Shimizu while Hensel faces Tennessee Tech's Michele Panzeri.
