The Tennessee men's tennis team opens its fall 2005 schedule Friday when it sends members of the squad to two different tournaments. David Baxendine, Bobby Cameron and Kaden Hensel will represent the Vols in a USTA Future's tournament in Costa Mesa, Calif., while Rawl Martin and Kiril Tcherveniachki will travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to participate in the Middle Tennessee Fall Invitational.
"We're looking forward to competing this weekend," head coach Chris Mahony said. "We've had a few weeks of strong practice and conditioning and now we're ready to compete."
Cameron spent most of last season playing at the No. 2 position in the singles lineup and with the departure of No. 1 player Mark Dietrich, the Lenoir City, Tenn. native figures to move up in the lineup. Cameron held his own in the rugged SEC as a freshman finishing the season 12-13 in singles with three victories over ranked opponents.
Hensel also had an impact as a freshman. The Australian appeared in every SEC match and finished the season 5-1 playing at the No. 5 singles position. Hensel also teamed up with Cameron to form UT's No. 2 doubles tandem and the duo went 13-6 in the spring.
Baxendine did not have as immediate impact on his new squad like the freshmen but the senior transfer from Arkansas Little-Rock did have some highlights including clinching a Big Orange win versus Memphis.
Martin is the most experienced Vol on this year's roster. Last season, Martin finished with a singles record of 4-6. Martin faces Francisco Redondo of Freed-Hardeman Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the Flight A3 singles draw.
Tcherveniachki spent the season playing at the No. 4 and 5 positions in Tennessee's lineup. The New Zealand native came on at the end of the season and clinched all three of the Vols victories at the SEC championships. Tcherveniachki opens his season Friday at 8:30 a.m. against Nate Emge of Kentucky in the Flight A1 singles draw.
