Tennessee Head Men's Golf Coach Jim Kelson announced the Volunteers' 2005-06 schedule this week. The Big Orange will participate in five events this fall and seven events in the spring leading up to the NCAA Championships.
The Vols golfers open their season with the 18th annual Tennessee Tournament of Champions Sept. 12-13. The tournament is once again being held at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville. Tennessee has claimed top honors at the event three times including last season. The teams competing in this year's event include Alabama, Arkansas, College of Charleston, the Finnish Junior Team, Florida State, Georgia Southern, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Florida, Tennessee, Tulane, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Two weeks later the Volunteers travel to Birmingham, Ala., to compete in the Shoal Creek Invitational Sept. 26-27. The Vols will then head to Johnson City, Tenn., to contend in The Ridges Intercollegiate. Tennessee won The Ridges Intercollegiate last season, and sophomore Philip Pettitt is the defending individual champion. Next up for UT will be the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga., Nov. 4-6. The Vols wrap up the fall with a trip to Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. to compete in the Hooter's Collegiate Match Play.
The Vols golfers open the spring with a challenger match against the University of Oklahoma. UT's first tournament of the New Year will be Feb. 5-7 at the UNF Collegiate Championship in Jacksonville, Fla. Tennessee then travels to Los Angeles to try and defend its title at the Ashworth Invitational. Senior Lloyd Campbell finished in a tie for sixth at last year's Ashworth.
Tennessee will spend the months of March and April in the Peach State, as the Volunteers will participate in four tournaments all held in Georgia. The Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational, March 18-19, in Statesboro, Ga. is up first for the Vols. The Vols led going into the final round of the tournament last year before finishing in a tie for third. April 1-2, UT will be in Augusta, Ga., for the Augusta State Invitational. The Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta will be Tennessee's final tuneup for the SEC championships.
The SEC championships will be held April 21-23 in Sea Island, Ga. Last season the Volunteers finished fifth in the event.
The NCAA East Regionals will be held May 18-20 in Orlando, Fla., at the Lake Nona Golf Club. The NCAA finals are scheduled to run from May 31 through June 3 in Sun River, Ore., at the Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort.
