TENNESSEE HEAD COACH Bruce Pearl: "We made progress. We wore Carson-Newman down, and that is the way we play. We had more rotation tonight, which certainly helped in taking a toll on Carson-Newman.
"Major Wingate and Andre Patterson did some things under the boards to find a good spot to get the ball. We have got to finish off those opportunities. They took advantage of our size differences over Carson-Newman.
"Tonight we had the fast break, and good continuity. It was not necessary for Chris Lofton to have a big number of shots.
"We had six players go into double figures, and Dane Bradshaw would have been there with just one more free-throw. I like to see that many players scoring big.
"Stanley Asumnu was very productive, with a high percentage and no turnovers. He made some strong moves in taking it to the basket. C.J. Watson will turn it up when it is necessary. He was on cruise control tonight. He and Lofton had to take over during the Southern Indiana game, but that was not the case tonight.
"We took the press off with about 16 minutes to go in the game. While we were using it, it took its toll. Patterson is responding the way he should, but he still has work to do in all areas. He is being very productive and understands the game. We have got to get better, one day at a time, to get ready for East Tennessee State next Friday."
CARSON-NEWMAN HEAD COACH DALE CLAYTON: "The last week and a half, we just have not shot the ball well. I thought the first half, if we make shots, some of those open 3-pointers, then it is a pretty good half. We were down 12 and we would probably have been down three or four. We did everything but shoot. We had only been out-rebounded by three (in the first half).
"We hung in there pretty well, but as the game progressed, their strength inside just wore us down. We are just young.
"I think last year's Tennessee team was more talented, and that is not being negative. The thing right now is they just play so hard, and they are playing a style allowing them to make depth an issue for both sides. Most teams do not want to play more than seven or eight people, but when you play Tennessee, you have got to play more people. I think that is a good way for them to play."
