Knoxville, Tenn. - Stanley Asumnu scored a game-high 19 points as six Volunteers reached double figures in Tennessee's 106-73 victory over the Division II Carson-Newman Eagles at Thompson-Boling Arena in an exhibition contest. The Vols won both preseason games, handing Southern Indiana an 86-78 loss on Nov. 3, and now play host to the East Tennessee State Buccaneers in the regular-season opener Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
A pair of Vols nearly recorded double-doubles against the undersized Eagles. Major Wingate scored 11 points with nine rebounds, while Dane Bradshaw led the team with 12 rebounds, while netting nine points and six assists.
Tennessee owned the glass in the second half, outrebounding Carson-Newman 25-12 and 49-33 for the game.
"We made progress," said head coach Bruce Pearl. "We wore Carson-Newman down, and that is the way we play. We had more rotation tonight, which certainly helped in taking a toll on Carson-Newman."
In his return from suspension, Andre Patterson contributed 17 points with seven rebounds. C.J. Watson had 15, Chris Lofton added 13 with eight assists and JaJuan Smith scored 10 with five assists.
"Major Wingate and Andre Patterson did some things under the boards to find a good spot to get the ball," said Pearl. "We have got to finish off those opportunities. They took advantage of our size differences over Carson-Newman."
Scott Williams led Carson-Newman with 15 points, while Andy Tipton and Clay Scott each scored 12.
"We hung in there pretty well, but as the game progressed, their strength inside just wore us down," said Carson-Newman coach Dale Clayton. "We are just young."
Tennessee's lead grew steadily in the second half to a high of 39 at 88-49 on Patterson's lay up with 8:04 remaining.
The Vols led 47-35 at halftime thanks to 12 points from Asumnu and seven points each from Wingate and Watson.
Carson-Newman led 9-8 early before the Vols went on a 28-9 over the next 10 minutes in building their largest first half lead of 18 at 36-18 on Watson's jumper with 6:50 remaining. The Vols scored 10 points off four Eagle turnovers during the run as Carson-Newman committed 12 in the half.
"We took the press off with about 16 minutes to go in the game," said Pearl. "While we were using it, it took its toll. Patterson is responding the way he should, but he still has work to do in all areas. He is being very productive and understands the game. We have got to get better, one day at a time, to get ready for East Tennessee State next Friday."
The Vols shot 55 percent from the field, making 44-of-80 field goals, while the Eagles shot 41.3 percent. The only blemish came at the free throw line where UT made just 10-of-23 charity tosses.
