The Tennessee men's golf team made history with its recent ranking as the No. 1 team in the country by Golfweek Magazine. This marks the first time a Tennessee golf team has garnered the top ranking in the country.
The rating system is based on a mathematical formula that uses a team or player's won-lost-tied record against other players when they play on the same course on the same day, and the stroke differential between those players, then links all players to one another based on common opponents.
The Vols opened the season with a victory at the Bank of Tennessee/Ridges Intercollegiate in Jonesborough, Tenn. As a team, Tennessee carded a 282-292-280--854 for the first team title since winning the 2002 Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational, as well as the program's first season-opening tournament win since claiming the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions title in the fall of 1993.
Freshman Philip Pettitt is also the No. 1 ranked individual in the country thanks to his season-opening victory at the Bank of Tennessee/Ridges Intercollegiate. Pettitt fired a 69-72-67--208 to win the individual portion of the tournament by two strokes over Anthony Kim of Oklahoma, and has a scoring average of 69.33.
Other Vols ranked among the top individuals are senior David Skinns at No. 19, senior John Scott Rattan at No. 21 and junior Lloyd Campbell at No. 22.
The Vols return to action Oct. 11-12, when they compete in the Gary Koch Intercollegiate in Tampa, Fla.
