Tennessee golf coach Jim Kelson announced the signing of Ricky Honeycutt of Chattanooga for the 2003-04 season.
Honeycutt comes to the Vols from Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tenn., where he was a member of the golf team for two years. While at Cleveland State Honeycutt finished fourth in the NJCAA Division II golf tournament.
Other notable achievements for Honeycutt include winning the 2003 Redbud and Signal Mountain Invitationals, as well as qualifying for the 2003 U.S. Amateur.
Prior to attending Cleveland State, Honeycutt was a member of The Baylor School golf team.
Kelson is excited to have Honeycutt on the team, as he thinks he will be able to make a positive contribution to the team.
"Ricky has rapidly become a very fine player," Kelson said. "He is a competitive person that knows how to win. His rate of development has been impressive and we look for Ricky to make a positive contribution to our program."
Honeycutt has ties to Tennessee that go back to his father Rick Honeycutt, who played baseball for the Vols from 1973-76. He also played major league baseball as a pitcher from 1977-97 for six teams: Seattle, Texas, Los Angeles, Oakland, New York (AL) and St. Louis.
The Vols open the 2003-04 season Sept. 13-14, at the Bank of Tennessee/Ridges Intercollegiate in Jonesborough, Tenn.
