Tennessee Set to Compete in 2003 SEC Golf Championships

The Tennessee men's golf team travels to Sea Island, Ga. April 25-27 to compete in the 2003 Southeastern Conference Championships. The tournament is again being held at The Seaside Course (par 70, 6,885 yards). This marks the third consecutive year the tournament is being played there.
The Vols enter the tournament with an overall record of 88-70-1 (.551) and an SEC record of 15-16 (.484).
Leading the way for the Vols is sophomore David Skinns. The reigning national and SEC Freshman of the Year leads the team in stroke average with a 71.55. He also leads the team with 16 rounds of par or better and six top 10 finishes. His highest finish came at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions, Seminole Intercollegiate and North Carolina State Intercollegiate where he finished second.

Competing in the two spot for the Big Orange will be sophomore John-Scott Rattan. Rattan has competed in 10 tournaments this season and has a stroke average of 74.59. He has two top 10 finishes on the season at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions (5th) and the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate (10th-t).
Senior Ian Parnaby will anchor the third position. Parnaby is second on the team in scoring average with a 72.50. He has 14 rounds of par or better and two 10 ten finishes. He claimed his first individual title as a Vol at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, and finished third at the Tulane Invitational.
Senior Andrew Pratt and sophomore Ross McGowan will compete in the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. Pratt has a stroke average of 75.73, while McGowan has a 74.21. They each have a top 10 finish, both coming at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate.
Five teams in the conference are ranked in the Golfweek Top 25. Those teams include No. 9 Florida, No.12 Auburn, No. 13 Georgia, No. 19 Arkansas, and No. 23 Tennessee.
Auburn claimed last year's title with a 285-282-290--857. Camilo Benedetti of Florida won the individual championship with a 70-72-68--210. Tennessee finished sixth with a 296-285-300--881. Then-senior Andrew Black led the Vols with a 74-74-71--219, finishing tied for 17th.
Tennessee has won the SEC team title twice, in 1980 and 1990. Three Vols have won the individual title with Mike Sposa being the last to do it in 1990. Mickey Mabry won in 1972 and Bert Greene was the first to claim top individual honors.
