Tennessee will compete in the 2002 Carpet Capital Collegiate Golf Tournament this weekend against some of the nation's top squads.
The 13th-ranked Vols will go against no less than 15 schools ranked in the nation's Top 25 this weekend at The Farm golf course in Rocky Face, Ga., Sept. 27-29.
Head coach Jim Kelson looks forward to this tournament each year and feels it is one of the top tournaments in college golf.
"The Carpet Capital Collegiate is generally regarded as one of the top three events in all of college golf and ranks among our favorites to compete in," Kelson said. "This is a magnificent course which will have a strong field of competition."
The Vols welcome sophomore David Skinns back into the lineup this weekend, as he will fill the No. 2 slot behind senior Ian Parnaby at the No.1 position. Parnaby recorded his first individual collegiate championship during UT's first tournament of the fall campaign at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate earlier this month. Freshmen Lawrence Dodd and Chris Robinson, along with sophomore John-Scott Rattan are also slated to compete.
Among the ranked teams scheduled for this weekend's tournament include No. 1 Georgia Tech, No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Florida and No. 4 Wake Forest. Other ranked teams include Texas (6), Arizona (8), Southern California (9), N.C. State (10), Georgia (11), Auburn (15), Augusta State (16), Oklahoma (17), Purdue (18), North Carolina (19), UNLV (20).
"We point towards this tournament due to the strong field and how it is a great test of golf and an indicator of where a team stands," Kelson said. "This tournament is the closest one we play that resembles a postseason championship due to the high caliber and difficulty of the golf course."
The tournament covers three days of competition, with 18 holes being played each day. A link to live scoring will be available at www.UTSports.com.
