David Skinns and former Vol Jason Powell were defeated during the second round of match play at the 2002 U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield, Mich.
Skinns faced off against D.J. Trahan, the 2002 Collegiate Player of the Year from Clemson, in the tournament's match play format. Skinns and Trahan battled for much of the first nine holes, with each player holding a lead no bigger than one hole. Trahan finally grabbed the lead for good on the ninth hole and did not look back. Trahan clinched the match at No. 17 going two-up with one to play.
Powell squared off against Southern California's Kevin Stadler. Stadler grabbed an early lead, then Powell took command until the two were tied after the sixth hole. Stadler then took command for good and won after the 16th hole when he was up three with two holes to be played.
The tournament will continue through Sunday's 36-hole championship and will be televised over the weekend on NBC.
The Vol golf team begins its fall schedule Sept. 14-15 at The Ridges Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tenn.
