Sophomore David Skinns and former Vol Jason Powell advanced Wednesday to the second round of match play at the 2002 U.S. Amateur Championship being held at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield, Mich.
Skinns faced off against Steve Lohmeyer, a sophomore at Kent State. After the first six holes, Skinns had a commanding five-hole lead before Lohmeyer cut the lead to one after 14. Skinns regrouped and won No. 15 and No. 18 to take the match by two holes, advancing to Thursday's match play in the round of 32.
Powell had a tougher match with LSU sophomore Heath West. Powell and West battled for much of their match with neither golfer having a lead bigger than two holes. Powell and West spent five of the nine final holes tied, including the final hole, which Powell won to secure his spot in the next round.
Skinns and Powell will be in action again Thursday with two more rounds of match play scheduled. It has not yet been determined who each player will square off against in the next round.
ESPN will televise Thursday's round from 2:30-5:30 p.m. (EDT) and Friday's Quarterfinals from 1-4 p.m. (EDT).
The Championship runs through Sunday with a 36-hole final that will televised nationally by NBC. The winner of the U.S. Amateur earns a spot in next year's U.S. Open.
