Skinns In U.S. Amateur Top 10 After Day 1

Four current members of the University of Tennessee golf team and one former Vol are currently competing in the 2002 U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield, Mich.
UT sophomore David Skinns leads the five competitors with Tennessee connections. Skinns, who was the Softspikes Freshman of the Year following his rookie season with the Vols, fired a 68 (two-under par) and is in 10th place, three strokes off the lead. He carded five birdies on the day, two on the front nine and three on the back nine.
Former Vol Jason Powell shot a one-under 69 to place him in a tie at 17th. Senior Andrew Pratt shot a 70 and is in 60th place. Sophomores Ross McGowan and John-Scott Rattan are both tied for 161st after firing scores of 75.
Connor Robbins, Alan Weant and Zach Atkinson lead the field and are tied for first with scores of 65 (5-under).
Following two days of stroke play from Aug. 19-20, the field of 312 golfers will be narrowed to the lowest 64 scorers, who will then advance to match play. All matches are 18 holes except the final match. The 36-hole championship final is scheduled for Aug. 25.
