Knoxville, Tenn. - Jeffery Terrell tossed the eighth no-hitter in Tennessee history as the Volunteers snapped a four-game losing streak and defeated the Bowling Green State Falcons, 5-0, in the home opener at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Terrell (1-0), who threw 108 pitches, became the first Vol to throw a nine-inning no hitter in recorded history as only two hitters reached safely on a hit-by-pitch in the fourth and a walk in the ninth. He finished with seven strikeouts.
It was the first no-hitter for Tennessee since five pitchers combined to no-hit the College of Charleston, Feb. 21, 2000. Terrell also became the first individual to throw a no-hitter since Bob Dillon against Kentucky, Mar. 24, 1990, in seven innings.
Kyle Knoblauch shutout the Vols (2-5) on three hits through the first four innings before leaving due to a pitch count.
Ryan Lindquist (0-1) took the loss, but he was his own worst enemy as he committed two errors in the seventh that allowed the Vols to take a 3-0 lead.
Walter Sevilla delivered an RBI single in the fourth that plated Matt Sternberg for a 1-0 lead.
A catastrophe of Falcon errors led to two unearned runs in the seventh as the Vols took 3-0 lead. Two miscues by Lindquist, one on a pick off at first and an overthrow on a sacrifice led to the two runs.
A one-out walk to Sternberg, who was replaced by pinch runner Nick Crowe, and an error by left fielder Matt Hundley on a fly ball by Hunter Rigsby gave Tennessee the two bases runners it would need to extend its lead. Jordan Czarniecki laid down sacrifice bunt that Lindquist fielded cleanly, but then overthrew the catcher allowing Crowe and Rigsby to score.
Tennessee added two more in the eighth on a double by Ryan Moffett and sacrifice by Dennis Gomez.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
