Knoxville, Tenn. - The Tennessee and Bowling Green State pitching staffs combined to walk 25 batters. But it was the Volunteers who managed to get the clutch hits and take advantage of the wildness as they posted a 10-6 win over the Falcons in the second of two games at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Jordan Czarniecki tied a school record by drawing four free passes, while Ryan Moffett drove in three runs on two hits, and Matt Sternberg added two more to lead Tennessee's seven-hit attack. Brandon Hopkins also had two RBI on a sacrifice fly and bases loaded walk.
Tennessee improved to 3-5, while Bowling Green State fell to 0-2.
Ben Riley (1-0) picked up his first win of the season as he shutout the Falcons on four hits over five innings with three strikeouts and three walks.
Joey Andrews was tagged for a run in the seventh on a groundout as he worked two innings.
Justin Reed pitched a scoreless eighth, working out of a bases loaded jam after he issued three walks.
Beau Massey closed out the game, but four Vol errors and four walks led to five unearned runs, as the Falcon rally fell short.
Doug Flere (0-1), who walked four, took the loss as he was lifted after allowing two runs on one hit in three innings.
Four other Falcon pitchers fared little better as they combined for 10 walks while giving up eight runs on six hits.
After scoring single runs in the first and third innings on a sacrifice fly and a Falcon error, respectively, the Vols broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning in taking an 8-0 lead.
Tennessee sent 11 men to the plate and took advantage of the Falcons' wildness as they issued five walks in the inning, including four straight and three with the bases loaded. Moffett extended his hitting streak to eight games in the frame with a two-run single to cap the scoring.
Bowling Green State scratched for a run in the seventh when Tim Newell scored on a ground out to make it 8-1 in favor of Tennessee.
The Vols tacked on two more in the bottom of the frame on the second of three wild pitches by Clayton Booth, and one more in the ninth on Moffett's second hit of the day.
Tennessee will go for its first sweep of the season Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
