Nov. 2, 2002
The Tennessee men's golf team will be making its first trip to Hawaii to compete in the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate. The tournament will be played at The Palmer Course (par 72, 7,199 yards) at the Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku, Hawaii from Nov. 4-5.
Head coach Jim Kelson is looking forward to this opportunity for his team.
"Obviously we are very excited about the chance to compete in Hawaii," Kelson said. "I believe of the eight people on the travel squad only one has been to Hawaii. This trip is a way of thanking the guys for their hard work, especially the two seniors who have dedicated so much time and work to this team."
Leading the way for UT will be sophomore David Skinns. Skinns is coming off his second consecutive top 10 finish at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions where he finished tied for second with a 68-67-70--205. He leads the team in stroke average with a 71.38. Slotted at the number two position is sophomore John-Scott Rattan. Rattan recently recorded his highest career finish as a Vol at the Coca-Cola TOC (5th-t) and owns a stroke average of 73.45.
Other Vols competing include senior Ian Parnaby at third, sophomore Ross McGowan at fourth and senior Andrew Pratt at fifth. Sophomore Brandon Skeen will be competing as an individual.
Teams participating in the tournament include CSU San Marcos, CSU Stanislaus, Hawaii, Hawaii-Hilo, International Pacific College of Australia, Osaka Gakuin University of Japan, Portland, San Diego State, San Francisco, Santa Clara, South Carolina, Tennessee, UC Riverside, UNLV, Virginia and Weber State.
Due to a five hour time difference between Tennessee and Hawaii scores will not be released until the following day.
