KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-- The second annual UT Fall Classic came to a close Sunday at the Varsity courts on the UT campus after a successful weekend. No Vols were in championship contention Sunday, but four Vol netters produced some great tennis in the third day of the ranked players draw.Tennessee freshman Mark Dietrich captured his second win over a ranked opponent in as many days Sunday, downing UAB's No. 95-ranked Andre Van der Merwe 7-5, 6-4. Dietrich played well the entire tournament and finished the event with a 3-1 record.
"Mark (Dietrich) has performed well all weekend," said UT assistant coach Chris Mahony. "He has worked hard and now he just continues to improve and impress."
Senior Mario Toledo was the second best Vol finisher with a 2-2 record in the ranked event. The No. 16-ranked Toledo evened his record Sunday with a 6-2, 6-4 win over team mate Wade Orr. Sophomore Simon Rea had a tough day Sunday, losing two matches to close the tournament with a 1-4 record. Rea first lost to No. 18-ranked Daniel Klemetz of MTSU, before falling to Ohio State's Adrian Bohane 6-0, 6-2.
The ranked players event was won by Ohio State's Phil Metz, who claimed a 5-0 record in the event. The main singles draw champion was Tennessee Tech's Garnot Fischer, while Vanderbilt's Lewis Smith and Scott Brown took home the doubles title.
