Miami Defeats Tennessee 21-13 in College World Series

OMAHA --- The No. 1 Miami Hurricanes used a seven-run second inning and a six-run sixth inning to post a 21-13 opening round win over the No. 8 Tennessee Volunteers in the 55th College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium before a crowd of 23,994.
Tennessee (46-19) will face Southeastern Conference rival Georgia Bulldogs (47-21) in an elimination game Monday at 3 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs, who lost to Southern California, 11-5, swept a three-game series from the Vols in Knoxville, Tenn., earlier this season. Miami (50-12) advances to face the Trojans (45-17) in a winner's bracket game Monday at 7 p.m.
Tennessee got as close as 12-10 in the sixth after rallying from a 9-0 deficit following three innings. The Vols scored a single run in the fourth and added three more in the fifth before the six-run sixth. Miami matched the Vols run-for-run in the fifth and sixth as they maintained their lead.
"Offensively, we did everything we needed to do to get back into the game," said Tennessee head coach Rod Delmonico. "Defensively, we misplayed a couple of balls, but we just couldn't pitch. We made a few good pitches, but they got a lot of good pitches to hit."
Danny Matienzo homered twice and collected four hits while driving in six runs as Miami pounded out 20 hits.
Jeff Christensen, Kris Bennett and Brandon Hopkins also slugged home runs for Tennessee as it collected a season-high 21 hits. Chris Burke, Javi Herrera and Hopkins led the way with three hits, while Hopkins paced the Vols with five RBI.
In the shortest start of his career (1 2/3 innings), Wyatt Allen (9-3) was chased in the second inning after allowing eight runs on seven hits.
Tom Farmer (14-2) allowed four runs on six hit in five innings of work with five strikeouts for the win.
Charlton Jimerson got the Hurricanes off to a quick start as he led off the bottom of the first with his ninth home run of the season for a 1-0 lead. Matienzo's two-run home run capped a seven-run second as Miami took an 8-0 advantage. The Canes plated their first five runs on a two-run single by Kevin Howard, an error, a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch.
They added a single run in the third on a Rodriguez's second RBI for a 9-0 lead.
Christensen put the Vols on the board leading off the fourth with his 11th home run, while Tennessee added three more in the fifth on a fielders choice, a sacrifice fly and a pinch hit single by Gomez to cut the lead to 9-4.
Miami got the three runs back in the bottom of the frame on two sacrifice flies and an RBI single by Javy Rodriguez to push the cushion back to 12-4.
Tennessee then pulled to within 12-10 in the sixth as its tacked up six runs on three Hurricane pitchers, including a three-run home run by Bennett that was sandwiched between a run scoring single by Brandon Hopkins, the second Miami error and a base hit by Adam Smith.
Miami got all six back in the bottom of the inning keyed by a two-run double by Mike DiRosa and a two-run single by Matienzo to extend the lead to 18-10.
Hopkins drove in Tennessee's final three runs with a two-run home run in the seventh and an RBI single in the eighth to make it 18-13.
Matienzo's second home run of the game in the eighth, followed two batters later by Kevin Brown's two-run blast made the final tally 21-13.
