The 2020-21 season marks Laura Miller’s fifth year as the Tennessee rowing program’s coordinator of on-campus recruitment and fall coach of the walk-on novice squad.
Having risen from novice rower to NCAA competitor herself, she knows firsthand the benefits of hard work, a strong foundation of teamwork and rowing skill and shares her passion for that process with Tennessee’s incoming walk-on classes.
The first race for novices each year is the Secret City Head Race in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. While Tennessee has won the event in multiple sequential years, the 2017 and 2018 squads swept the medal podium.
Before Miller’s return to Tennessee, Laura served as the head novice coach at Old Dominion University for three years.
Selected as a second-team CRCA All-American in 2010, Miller was part of three Tennessee teams that competed at the NCAA Rowing Championships. She received Tennessee’s 2010 Athlete of the Year and Most Inspirational awards. That same year, she also earned All-Region, All-Conference and Conference USA Rower of the Year distinction.
Miller rowed in the second varsity eight as a novice for the 2007 NCAAs, propelled the second varsity eight to a fifth-place finish in the grand final at NCAAs in 2008 and received the program’s “Effort = Achievement” award in 2009.
After receiving her bachelor’s degree from UT in 2010, Laura accepted a graduate assistantship with the Tennessee rowing program and completed her master’s degree in Kinesiology in 2013.
