Assistant coach David Hall joined the Tennessee rowing program prior to the 2021-22 campaign.
"It's an honor to join Coach Cupini's staff as she begins an exciting career at UT," Hall said. "There's no doubt in my mind that her vision, coupled with the exceptional staff she's assembled, will push Tennessee rowing into the national conversation as we pursue excellence on and off the water."
Hall helped lead Tennessee to its best season in program history during the 2023-24 campaign. The Lady Vols ascended to No. 3 in the CRCA national rankings by season’s end, and placed third nationally—a program-best finish—at the 2024 NCAA Championships.
Hall and the rest of the Tennessee coaching staff earned the CRCA National Staff of the Year Award for their remarkable efforts in 2023-24.
At the 2024 Big 12 Championships, the Lady Vols tied their best-ever finish, placing second as a team and medaling in all five boats. Tennessee’s five CRCA All-Americans in 2023-24 marked a program record, as UT upped its all-time First Team All-American count from three to seven.
In 2023, Hall coached the 1V4 and 2V4, with the 1v4 squad earning silver and the 2v4 winning bronze in the program’s best-ever finish at the Big 12 Championship. The 1V4 boat cruised to its best finish ever at the championship, posting a time of 7:19.182. It capped the year with a 27-13 record. The 2v4 crew narrowly beat out Kansas State by less than 0.03 seconds with a 7:29.036 effort, improving the boat record to 26-12 for the season.
Boasting 10 years of experience coaching at the junior ranks, Hall joined the Tennessee rowing staff following a one-year stint as the Director of Rowing for Chattanooga Rowing in 2020-21. While there, he oversaw all operations for the rowing center and coached athletes of all ages. Prior to that, he served as the head coach at Girls Preparatory School for three years (2017-20) preceded by three months as an assistant coach (2017). During his time there, he coached the squad to three top-6 finishes at the SRAA National Championships.
In 2015-16, Hall held roles with Nashville Rowing (2015-16) and served with the U.S. Rowing Men’s Junior National Team (2015). Prior to that, he spent four years as the high school rowing coach for Chattanooga Junior Rowing, where he coached the program to three national championships in the women’s lightweight 4+ in 2012 and 2013, and the men's 2- in 2014.
“I’m very excited to be on Rocky Top and coaching with the Lady Vols,” said Hall. “Given my background, I’m looking forward to working with our rowers and talented transfers. I’ve developed rowers in high school and helped in their transition to the next level. Now, I get to coach them as they improve their skill in college.”
A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Hall graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He attended high school at Grace Baptist Academy.
