Just months after concluding his playing career for the University of Tennessee men’s basketball team, Colin Coyne rejoined the program in August 2024 as a student assistant coach. He then moved into a graduate assistant role in May 2025.
During his first campaign on staff, 2024-25, Tennessee had one of its best years ever. The Volunteers posted a 30-8 (12-6 SEC) record and made the Elite Eight. After spending the entire season in the AP top 12, including 18 straight weeks in the top eight and five at No. 1, Tennessee tied a program best by placing fifth in the final poll. Chaz Lanier and Zakai Zeigler both garnered All-America distinction.
A native of Fredericksburg, Va., Coyne was an all-district honoree and team captain at Stafford Senior High School, from which he graduated in 2019. He then went to Mary Washington University, a Division III school in his hometown, for three years.
Coyne appeared in 27 games for the Eagles as a freshman in 2019-20 and the team did not compete at all in 2020-21. He then appeared in 25 games in 2021-22, averaging 5.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per contest, while shooting 58.4 percent from the floor.
In total, Coyne made 23 starts at Mary Washington before transferring to Tennessee in advance of the 2022-23 campaign. He played in four games that year and then four during the 2023-24 season, as well.
A valuable component of the Tennessee scout team, Coyne’s efforts helped the Volunteers go 52-20 during his two seasons, including 25-11 in SEC play. Tennessee made the Sweet 16 each year and won an outright SEC regular season title in 2023-24.
Coyne, who graduated from Tennessee in December 2023 with a degree in business analytics, earned both NABC Honors Court and SEC Academic Honor Roll distinction in each of his seasons with the Volunteers.
Along with his role on the men’s basketball staff, Coyne is currently pursuing a master’s degree in business administration at Tennessee.
