#16 Vols Fire 6-Under-Par Opening Round at Bryan Regional
May 18, 2026 | Men's Golf
BRYAN, Texas – The No. 16 Tennessee men's golf team began NCAA tournament play on Monday with the opening round of the Bryan Regional at the Traditions Club.
The No. 3 seeded Volunteers opened the tournament with a solid 6-under-par round of 282. The result puts Tennessee in fifth place among the 14 teams competing through 18 holes. With the top five teams advancing to the NCAA Championships after 54 holes, the Vols are above the projected cut line with two rounds still to play, sitting four strokes above sixth-place Chattanooga.
Host Texas A&M, the No. 5 seed, leads the field at 12-under-par through one round, two strokes ahead of No. 2 seeded North Carolina at 10-under-par. The regional's No. 1 seed, Texas is just one stroke ahead of Tennessee through 18 holes at 7-under-par.
Josh Hill paced the Vols in round one, carding the team's low score of the day with a 4-under-par 68. After suffering bogey on hole No. 1, the senior tallied five birdies to go low, including a stretch of three consecutive birdies on hole No. 5 through hole No. 7. Through 18 holes, Hill is tied for fourth place among the field of 75, trailing the individual lead by just two strokes.
Chase Kyes marked his NCAA Regional debut with an impressive 2-under-par 70. The Tennessee freshman went bogey free on his final 12 holes of the day, carding birdies on two of his final four holes to post a red number. Kyes is tied for tenth place with 36 holes remaining.
Lance Simpson came up big for Tennessee in round one as an experienced senior in the Vols' lineup, matching Kyes with a 2-under-par 70. The Knoxville, Tennessee, native matched Hill's team-high birdie count of five to earn his 20th round of par or better this season. Alongside Kyes, Simpson is tied for tenth place entering tomorrow's second round.
Bruce Murphy and Jackson Herrington tied for the final countable score toward Tennessee's team total in round one. A small amount of bogey trouble saw the pair post 2-over-par rounds of 74. Murphy opened the day with an even-par front nine, before three bogeys on the back nine set his round back. It looked like Herrington had recovered from a slow start on the front nine with three birdies on the back nine, but a double bogey on hole No. 17 kept the sophomore from carding a round of par or better. The duo is tied for 44th place ahead of round two.
Due to expected inclement weather in the area on Wednesday, there will be an attempt to play rounds two and three on Tuesday to conclude the tournament. Tennessee will begin the second round at hole No. 10, with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. EST. Round three is planned to begin shortly after the conclusion of round two. Babygrande Golf will continue to provide a purchasable live stream of the event through its conclusion.
