Pitching Dominates as #13/20 Vols Take Down Hokies
March 01, 2026 | Baseball
ARLINGTON, Texas – Dominant pitching led No. 13/20 Tennessee to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Tech to finish off a 2-1 weekend at the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series at Globe Life Field.
The Volunteers' pitching staff limited the Hokies to just one run on three hits and combined for 11 strikeouts on the day.
Neither team recorded a hit through the first two innings, but that changed in the bottom of the third when Ariel Antigua legged out an infield single to start a two-out rally for the Vols. After a walk by Jay Abernathy to extend the inning, Henry Ford came through with an RBI single to score Antigua from second and give UT a 1-0 lead.
The Hokies (7-4) answered immediately with a leadoff home run from Nick Locurto to start the fourth and tie the game at one.
After escaping a Virginia Tech threat in the top of the sixth, Tennessee (8-3) was able to string together some hits in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back RBI doubles from Blaine Brown and Levi Clark to retake the lead.
Vols' starting pitcher Evan Blanco had an impressive outing despite picking up a no-decision, allowing just one run on two hits and a walk over 5.1 innings while striking out six batters.
Veteran left-handed reliever Mark Hindy earned his first win as a Vol after recording two big outs to get UT out of a jam in the sixth. With two on and one out, the Duke transfer struck out Trey Hughes before getting Hudson Lutterman to pop up to end the inning.
Brayden Krenzel shut down the Hokies over the final three innings to pick up his first save, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out four to close the door.
UP NEXT: The Vols return home for five games next week at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, starting with a pair of midweek contests against ETSU and Oakland on Tuesday and Wednesday before hosting Wright State for a weekend series starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
