Weekend Preview: The Lady Vols Head to New York for Matches Against Delaware State, St. John's

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Lady Vols hit the road after a four-match home stand as they travel to Queens, New York for games against Delaware State and St. John's.
The weekend begins on Saturday, Sept. 13, with Tennessee meeting Delaware State at noon. This marks the first match-up between the Lady Vols and the Hornets since 2015, and their first under head coach Eve Rackham Watt. The Lady Vols will then take on St. John's on Sunday, Sept. 14 to close out the weekend. First serve for that match is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Lady Vols and the Red Storm.
The Big Orange are coming off an impressive performance after defeating #21 Georgia Tech in the inaugural Showdown at the Net. Four players finished with double-digit kills, with Starr Williams leading the way with 17. Caroline Kerr notched her 10th career game with 50 or more assists, finishing the contest with 53. Kerr also picked up her 14th career double-double, adding 13 digs in the outing.
Offense continues to be a big part of the Lady Vols' early season success. The team ranks in the top ten in hitting percentage (.327), kills per set (14.71), and assists per set (13.62). Eight players have 20 or more kills through six games, with sophomore Paityn Chapman leading the way with 63. The squad has been efficient on the offensive end as well, with six players with a hitting percentage over .300. Zoë Humphrey leads the pack with a .538 hitting percentage, followed by Chelsea Sutton at .507 and Paityn Chapman at .418.
The defense has also starred in the early part of the season. Through its first six games, Tennessee is holding opposing teams to a .130 hitting percentage. That ranks 20th nationally, with opponents averaging just 9.62 kills per set. The Big Orange block defense has been successful early on, with five players with 10 or more blocks. Sutton is the early leader with 24, while Humphrey follows closely behind with 20. Sydney Jones and Starr Williams are next with 11 each, and Keondreya Granberry rounds out the list with 10. Tennessee is also averaging 13.29 digs per set, with transfer libero Gülce Güçtekin leading the squad with 95 digs.
