
Vescovi Shines for Uruguay in FIBA AmeriCup

MANAGUA, Nicaragua – Former University of Tennessee men's basketball standout Santiago Vescovi excelled during Uruguay's run at the FIBA AmeriCup 2025.
Vescovi, who played for Tennessee from 2019-24, averaged a team-best 14.3 points per game across the team's four games at Polideportivo Alexis Argüello in Nicaragua. The two-time First Team All-SEC guard added 3.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.0 steal in 27.0 minutes per game to his ledger.
The Montevideo, Uruguay, native shot a dazzling 64.3 percent (18-of-28) from the floor, including 46.7 percent (7-of-15) beyond the arc, as well as 87.5 percent (14-of-16) at the line.
With four games left in the event—two semifinal matchups, the championship and the third-place contest—Vescovi is tied for second among all competitors in free-throw percentage and ninth in 3-point percentage. He also sits tied for No. 13 in made 3-pointers per game (1.8), tied for No. 16 in scoring average and tied for No. 25 in assists average.
Vescovi helped his home country finish second in Group A and advance to the tournament quarterfinals.
In an 86-85 upset victory over the United States in group play, Vescovi scored a team-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including a 4-of-7 clip from deep. He also tallied what proved to be the game-winning basket, en route to claiming TCL Player of the Game honors. It marked just Uruguay's second victory over the United States in FIBA AmeriCup play.
Although Uruguay fell to the United States in a quarterfinal rematch, Vescovi totaled a team-leading 17 points. He shot 5-of-8 from the field and 6-of-6 at the line, plus paced all participants with three steals.
After departing Tennessee in 2024, Vescovi played his first professional season for Baxi Manresa in Spain's Liga ACB. He has signed to play with Peñarol in his hometown for the upcoming 2025-26 campaign.
One of the finest players in Tennessee history, Vescovi departed as the program's all-time leader in steals (212) and starts (128). The 6-foot-3, 196-pounder hit 325 3-pointers as a Volunteer, good for third-most in program history and eighth-most by an SEC player.
Furthermore, Vescovi concluded his time on Rocky Top fourth in wins (106), eighth in assists (453), No. 10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.75), No. 10 in 3-point percentage (37.2), No. 11 in free-throw percentage (79.8), No. 13 in steals per game (1.42) and No. 18 in scoring (1,540). He is the only Volunteer ever to amass at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists and 150 steals in a career.
