Tennessee Athletics Continues to Flourish in Latest Academic Progress Rate Data
May 06, 2025 | General
Ten UT teams earned a perfect 1,000 single-year APR for the 2023-24 academic year
The NCAA released its annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) data Tuesday, and once again, multiple Tennessee athletics programs posted perfect 1,000 single- and multi-year scores.
Every Division I sports team across the nation calculates its APR each academic year, like a report card. Scholarship student-athletes each semester earn one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. Data released for this multi-year cohort includes scores from the 2023-24, 2022-23, 2021-22 and 2020-21 academic years. For APR purposes, indoor and outdoor track & field scores are computed together, so Tennessee has 18 teams/sports that are scored.
"Our culture of competitive excellence is driven by committed men and women who are determined to succeed both in their sport and in the classroom. The APR data clearly showcases their impressive accomplishments," said Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Danny White. "Chris Johnson and his outstanding team at the Thornton Athletics Student Life Center are fully dedicated to elevating the student-athlete experience by providing exceptional academic support, robust professional development and meaningful community engagement opportunities."
Ten Tennessee teams earned a perfect 1,000 single-year APR for the 2023-24 academic year: baseball, men's basketball, men's golf, men's swimming and diving, soccer, softball, women's golf, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis, and volleyball.
In multi-year data, eight programs tied or increased their marks from last year. Three teams posted their best multi-year rate in program history (baseball, men's basketball soccer) while three additional programs tied their best-multi-year rate (women's golf, women's tennis, volleyball).
Men's basketball, women's golf, women's tennis and volleyball all were lauded by the NCAA with the APR Public Recognition Award for ranking in the Top 10 percent in their respective sport for multi-year rate.
"The sustained academic success of our student-athletes is a testament to the commitment and unrelenting pursuit of a personal best mentality," said Chris Johnson, Senior Associate Athletics Director & Assistant Provost. "The most recent data reaffirms our institutional and departmental top-down approach of challenging student-athletes to compete in all that they do. All credit to the student-athletes, coaches, administrators, campus partners, and Tennessee Tailored staff for their unyielding commitment to student achievement."
Every Division I sports program submits data to have its Academic Progress Rate calculated each academic year. The NCAA reports both single‐year and four‐year rates, based on which penalties for poor academic performance are based.
National aggregates are based on all teams with usable, member‐provided data. APRs for each team, lists of teams receiving public recognition and those receiving sanctions are normally available online through the NCAA's searchable database. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, normal operations of awarding public recognition to high-performing programs and assessing penalties to poorly performing programs have been halted until Spring 2024.
