#6 Tennessee Wins Nine Races on Day One of Big Ten Invitational

SARASOTA, Fla. – The sixth-ranked Tennessee rowing team put together a dominant showing on day one of the Big Ten Invitational Friday, collecting nine victories across 10 races at Nathan Benderson Park.

In Friday's morning session, Tennessee's first varsity eight crew opened its day with a dominant performance, crossing the line in 6:14.654 to beat No. 14 Ohio State by nearly nine seconds, putting down the second-fastest time of any boat in the field on day one. The only faster time all day was that of No. 3 Washington's 1V8 crew in the afternoon session (6:13.582). The Lady Vols maintained control throughout, also finishing ahead of No. 17 Oregon State, Michigan State, SMU, and UCLA.

In the morning's second varsity eight race, UT posted another commanding win, clocking in at 6:27.128—more than 11 seconds ahead of second-place UCLA. No. 17 Oregon State, Michigan State, No. 14 Ohio State, and SMU rounded out the field.

The 1V4+ crew for Tennessee earned a race victory of its own with a final time of 7:12.509, edging No. 14 Ohio State by over four seconds and finishing well ahead of the remaining four crews.

Chronologically speaking, Tennessee's 2V4+ was the first Lady Vol crew to compete Friday morning. That boat recorded a race win by crossing the line in 7:19.209. The Lady Vols outpaced No. 17 Oregon State by three seconds and held off No. 14 Ohio State by more than four. UCLA, Michigan State, and SMU followed behind.

In the 3V8+ race, which capped UT's action in the day's opening session, Tennessee posted a decisive win with a time of 6:44.854—more than seven seconds ahead of second-place, ninth-ranked Rutgers. Iowa, Miami, Minnesota, and Wisconsin each crossed the line in seven-plus minutes.

In the afternoon session, Tennessee's 1V8+ group earned its second victory of the day in as many races. The crew clocked in at 6:15.157 to conquer No. 9 Rutgers by five seconds. The Lady Vols also finished over 10 seconds ahead of No. 11 Penn and No. 12 Michigan, while SMU trailed the field.

UT's 2V8+ continued Tennessee's winning trend Friday, crossing in 6:28.438 for another comfortable win. The Lady Vols built a margin of nearly six seconds on Rutgers and almost 10 on No. 12 Michigan, while Penn and SMU finished in fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the first varsity four afternoon race, Tennessee earned another win with a time of 7:16.604—nearly four seconds ahead of No. 12 Michigan and nearly seven seconds faster than that of No. 9 Rutgers.

The Lady Vols' only non-win of the day came in the second varsity four race, where they finished second (7:18.471) behind only ninth-ranked Rutgers. Still, Tennessee topped No. 11 Penn by over 11 seconds.

Tennessee's 3V8+ lineup logged an afternoon time of 6:45.988—over eight seconds ahead of No. 14 Ohio State—to win its second race of the day.
