Lady Vols Collect a Pair of Wins Over UT Martin

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee women's tennis team opened dual match play with a pair of dominant 7-0 wins over UT Martin.Â

UT (2-0) won all three doubles matches in both duals and did not surrender a set to the Skyhawks (0-2) in singles play.

MATCH ONE | Tennessee 7, UTM 0

UT opened the match taking the doubles point, winning all three matches to go into singles play with a 1-0 lead.Â

The junior duo of Julie Ball and Rebeka Mertena claimed the first victory for the Big Orange with a 6-0 triumph over Jillian Niedzialowski and Sina Albersmeier on court three.Â

Daria Kuczer and Esther Adeshina clinched the doubles point on court two with a 6-1 victory over Amelia Campbell and Jule Streif. Tenika McGiffin and Carly Briggs followed with a 6-2 win over Daphne Pratt and Aziza Aubin on court one.Â

Briggs collected the first singles point of the day, downing Campbell in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) on court one. Sophomore Callie Creath followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court five over Albersmeier.Â

McGiffin clinched the match, giving the Lady Vols a 4-0 advantage over the Skyhawks with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Streif on court three. Kuczer followed quickly with a straight-set victory (6-2, 6-3) win over Aubin on court four.Â

Mertena collected UT's sixth point with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Pratt on court two. Adeshina closed the match with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Mizuki Sakurai.Â

UT started fast, taking the doubles point and all three doubles matches in their afternoon dual with UTM.

The pair of Ball and junior Kylie Duckworth earned the first victory on court three, downing Sakurai and Ondo 6-2. Adeshina and Kuczer quickly followed with a 6-4 triumph over Pratt and Aubin to give the Lady Vols the doubles point.Â

On court one, McGiffin and Briggs battled with Campbell and Streif to earn a hard-fought 6-4 win.

Mertena opened scoring in singles play with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over Aubin on court two. Adeshina quickly followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Niedzialowski on court five.Â

Creath clinched the match on court four with a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-0) over Sakurai. Ball then gave UT their fifth point when she defeated Ondo 6-1, 6-2 on court six.Â

McGiffin downed Pratt 6-0, 6-2 on court one to give UT their sixth point and Kuczer ended the dual with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Streif on court three.Â

The Lady Vols return to competition on Monday, Jan. 18, when they host Furman inside the Goodfriend Tennis Center. First serve is set for 11 a.m. ET.

All home matches played inside the Goodfriend Tennis Center will be conducted without fans per SEC COVID-19 protocols. Information regarding fans at outdoor matches played at Barksdale Stadium will be announced at a later date.
