KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 4/4 Tennessee scored three runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and one more in the fifth to earn a 7-0 victory over Missouri on Saturday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
Matty Moss claimed her 10th win of the season for the Lady Vols (23-1, 2-0 SEC), striking out seven batters and not allowing a hit over the final four innings. Freshman Gabby Sprang started the game and recorded four strikeouts while yielding no runs to the Tigers (19-9, 0-2 SEC).
UT opened the scoring with three runs in the third inning, as three consecutive singles got the bases loaded for Meghan Gregg. Gregg was then hit by a pitch to move the runners and get Tennessee on the board. Chelsea Seggern then followed up by grounding into a fielder's choice which allowed Aubrey Leach to come home. The next batter, Abby Lockman, drilled a single to left field that brought in Jenna Holcomb from third and made it 3-0 in favor of the Lady Vols.
Tennessee gained some breathing room in the fourth inning with three more runs. With one out, Scarlet McSwain stepped in and launched a towering fly ball over the left field foul pole for a solo shot that made it 4-0. After CJ McClain singled and Leach was hit by a pitch to get two runners on, Jenna Holcomb hit into a fielder's choice that saw Leach advance to second on a throwing error and McClain coming all the way home from second. Seggern singled two batters later to score Leach and UT exited the frame with a 6-0 advantage.
The Lady Vols added on one more in the fifth as a McClain sacrifice fly to center field allowed Tianna Batts to tag up from third.Â
