McSwain, Ayala Power Lady Vols to Series Sweep Over Mizzou

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Scarlet McSwain and freshman Amanda Ayala had four RBIs each as No.4 Tennessee completed the three-game sweep of Missouri with an 11-3 win in six innings on Sunday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

Mizzou (16-10, 0-3 SEC) scored a run in the top of the third inning when Braxton Burnside singled into left field to score Kolby Romaine.

Tennessee (24-1, 3-0 SEC) answered in scoring seven runs in the home-half of the third inning. Meghan Gregg singled up the middle to score Aubrey Leach to get things going for the Lady Vols. Ayala picked up two of her four RBIs when she singled up the middle to score Gregg and Chelsea Seggern, respectively. Ashley Morgan hit an RBI single up the middle and McSwain followed with a three-run home run over the wall in left center field to give UT the 7-1 lead.

The visiting Tigers added two more runs in the top of the fourth when Hattie Moore doubled down the left field line to score Callie Martin, and then Amanda Sanchez scored Moore on a single up the middle.

Tennessee would respond in kind with two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Ayala picked up two more RBIs after hitting a single to right field to score Gregg and Jenna Holcomb and increase the lead to 9-3.

The Big Orange, needing just two runs to take the series, got a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth inning from Gregg, followed by a McSwain single that plated Abby Lockman and the Lady Vols the 11-3 win.

In the victory, McSwain hit her sixth home run of the season, while Gregg picked up her seventh of the campaign.

Matty Moss (11-1) threw three relief innings with one strikeout and one run allowed to earn her 11th win of the season. Caylan Arnold started the game and allowed two runs over three frames.

Up Next: Tennessee will travel to Hawaii to play in the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic. Once in the Rainbow State, the Lady Vols will face Cleveland State, North Dakota, Hawaii and Maryland beginning Wednesday, March 14. The four-day event runs through March 17.
