Lady Vols Defeat San Jose State, 7-6

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 11 Tennessee softball team withstood a comeback attempt from San Jose State en route to a 7-6 win on Friday to close out the second day of the Kajikawa Classic.

The Lady Vols (4-0) led 7-4 after four innings, before San Jose State threatened in the bottom of the sixth – scoring twice to cut the lead to 7-6.
Â
San Jose State then loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on a single and a pair of walks – one intentional – before the game ended on a batter's interference call.

A Meghan Gregg RBI single in the first gave Tennessee a 1-0 lead, and the Lady Vols pushed across two more runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Two walks and a passed ball preceded a double down the right field line from Scarlet McSwain, bringing home Gregg and Chelsea Seggern.

San Jose State scored three runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 3-3.

The Lady Vols responded in the top of the fourth by pushing across four runs. Seggern brought in two of those runs with a single with the bases loaded, giving Tennessee a 5-3 lead, before Ashley Morgan added another two-run single later in the inning to push the lead to 7-3.

A Kaelin Amrein home run in the bottom of the fourth cut the lead to 7-4.

Gregg and Jenna Holcomb each had two hits, while Seggern, McSwain and Morgan led the way with two RBIs each. Gregg also walked twice, reaching base in all four plate appearances.

Gabby Sprang picked up her second win of the season, throwing four innings of relief. Starter Caylan Arnold struck out four in two innings.
