Lady Vols Sweep Day 1 With 7-1 Win Over Bethune-Cookman

Cathedral City, Calif. -- Senior Meghan Gregg went 3-for-4 with a home run to lead No. 11 Tennessee to a 7-1 win over Bethune-Cookman on Thursday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
After defeating BYU 13-0 earlier in the day, the Lady Vols (12-1) let the bats fly once again to sweep Day 1 of the Classic. Gregg's homer came as a three-run shot in the third, bringing her RBI total on the day to six.
Matty Moss earned the win to improve to 6-1 on the season. The junior pitcher went six innings and struck out four while allowing a run.
For the second straight game, Tennessee got things moving early on, as consecutive bunt singles by Aubrey Leach and Jenna Holcomb followed by a groundout to advance them over by Gregg put runners in scoring position with one out. Cleanup hitter Chelsea Seggern singled up the middle to score both and give the Lady Vols a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, leadoff batter Abby Lockman took a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence for her second home run of the season, tying her total from last year. Bethune-Cookman would answer in the bottom half, however, as Kailey Richards led off with a double down the left field line and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Iesha Waters to cut it to 3-1.
Tennessee would come right back in the third, as Gregg led off the frame with a single. Seggern would then walk to advance pinch-runner Sheridan Allen to second. Two batters later, freshman Ashley Morgan continued her strong start to her collegiate career with an RBI single through the right side that scored Allen and put the Lady Vols ahead by three runs again.
Bethune-Cookman was able to keep it at 4-1 until the fourth inning, but back-to-back singles from CJ McClain and Leach followed by the three-run shot by Gregg gave UT all the insurance it needed.
UP NEXT: Tennessee continues the Mary Nutter Classic on Friday with a 6 p.m. EST matchup with UC Davis before taking on Oregon State at 9 p.m. EST.
