GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The 19th-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team fell to No. 1 Florida on Sunday, 4-0, at Linder Stadium at the Ring Tennis Complex.
"Winning an SEC Title means beating Florida one day," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "Our team is on a mission, just as every other team in our conference is. We did a fantastic job executing in five of the nine matches today. In the other four matches, we learned a lot that we will improve on starting Tuesday at practice. I'm incredibly proud of our team and our heart."
The Vols (14-6, 1-5 SEC) weren't able to get in a rhythm against the Gators, dropping the doubles point and the first three courts to finish in singles.
In doubles, both Tennessee teams fell in 6-0 matches on Courts 2 and 3, giving UF an early 1-0 lead.
The Volunteers put up a fight in the first set of singles, taking two courts and forcing a tiebreaker on another, but the Gators were able to hold off a potential comeback.
Johanna Silva dropped her match to 12th-ranked Josie Kuhlman, 6-0, 6-2. Sadie Hammond lost her matchup with No. 14 Ingrid Neel, 6-0, 6-3, on Court 2. The Gators clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win on Court 5 by No. 125 Brooke Austin over Gabby Schuck, 6-1, 6-3.
Tennessee returns home next week to host Mississippi State on Friday at 6 p.m. and Ole Miss on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Barksdale Stadium.
