KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The 23rd-ranked Tennessee women’s tennis team (14-7, 1-6 SEC) was unable to get any momentum going on Friday night, dropping its match to No. 25 Mississippi State, 4-0, at Barksdale Stadium.
“Tonight was a rough one,” head coach Alison Ojeda said. “We’ve had a long week of practice. Our team is made up of a lot of fight, hustle, energy, intensity and focus. Since Sunday after the Florida match, that just hasn’t been there. This whole week has been off, so the level of tennis tonight didn’t surprise me because that is what we saw in practice. Our lack of energy, discipline, intensity and heart tonight was what surprised me.
“If we were to end the season tonight, there is no doubt that it would be considered a successful season. With that said, we have several matches left. They’re all going to be tough, so we will find out what we are made of. We will have a choice to make on how we are going to respond from tonight. I’m really proud of Kim Kermet. She did a good job of stepping up and filling in for Gabby Schuck tonight. She did really well in doubles and singles. It's means a lot when one of your players and teammates steps up like she did tonight.”
In doubles, the duo of Ariadna Riley and Johanna Silva lost, 6-1, on Court 3 to Sara Lizariturry and Madison Harrison. The Bulldogs clinched the doubles point on Court 1, where the team of Brittany Lindl and Eve Repic fell short to the 11th-ranked team in Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux, 6-2.
In singles, Sadie Hammond fell in a 6-1, 6-0 contest to Madison Harrison. Lindl lost to 32nd-ranked Jasmine Lee, 6-2, 6-1. The Bulldogs then clinched the match on Court 2, with Lisa Marie Rioux edging Repic, 6-4, 6-2.
Tennessee will wrap up the weekend with a matchup against No. 28 Ole Miss on Sunday at Barksdale Stadium or Goodfriend Tennis Center, pending on the weather. That contest will begin at 1 p.m. ET and the scheduled kids clinic will follow after the match is complete.
