KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee women's tennis team's hot streak continued on Sunday, as the Vols swept Belmont and Lipscomb on Senior Day at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
"I'm really happy that our seniors got to spend time with their families today," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "Yesterday, we talked about how our team needed to come out and fight for the seniors and play for them. We definitely did that. Everybody did a great job, and I appreciate the turnout from our students and the Knoxville community."
In the first match of the day, the Vols (11-1) shut out Belmont, 7-0. Ashley Bongart and Johanna Silva got things started in doubles, picking up a 6-0 win over Abbie Mather and Maddie Gilley. Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck clinched the doubles point for UT, defeating Laura Kent and Laura Van Eeckhoudt, 6-1, on Court 2.
Tennessee rolled through singles, winning in straight sets on all six courts to sweep the Bruins. The 7-0 win marked the seventh shutout this season for the Vols.
In the second match of the day, the Lady Bisons were shorthanded, traveling only five players. UT started with a 1-0 lead because of the forfeit on Court 6 in singles and only needed one win in doubles to clinch the point. Hammond and Schuck clinched their second doubles point of the day with a 6-2 victory over Thabile Tshatedi and Hannah Gamage.
UT's success continued in singles, taking four of the five courts. Seniors Eve Repic and Brittany Lindl, who were honored before the first match, both earned their second wins of the day. Silva and Kim Kermet also picked up their second singles win to lead the Volunteers past Lipscomb, 6-1.
Tennessee hits the road next weekend, traveling to Las Vegas to face Kansas and UNLV before beginning SEC play.
"Our team is now shifting gears from Senior Day and moving towards the next couple of matches," Ojeda said. "We have two fantastic opportunities in front of us to play against teams who have proven themselves to be very good. I have known Todd Chapman at Kansas for a long time, and I respect the way he runs his programs. We have to spend the next three days training with extreme focus and a very clear understanding of what we're trying to achieve. If we can do that, then we will be prepared for this next opportunity."
