KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After suffering its first loss of the season last weekend, the Tennessee women's tennis team responded with back-to-back shutouts over Indiana and Liberty at Goodfriend Tennis Center on Sunday.
"I'm really proud of our team," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We responded to last weekend's loss versus Georgia Tech in a way that only great teams respond. We improved in practice, we focused on our matches and we executed. I knew when I hired Ty Schaub that he was going to be great. As time has gone on, he's been an incredible asset to our program. I'm excited to see us continue to grow together."
In the first match of the day, the Vols (9-1) jumped out to an early lead over the Hoosiers with a 6-1 win on Court 3 by Ariadna Riley and Ashley Bongart. The duo of Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck clinched the doubles point with a victory over Paula Gutierrez and Pauline Jahren.
Bongart got things started in singles with a 6-0, 6-0 performance on Court 6. Johanna Silva quickly followed with a win against Jahren, 6-3, 6-0. Hammond breezed past Madison Appel, 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the match. Eve Repic finished out her match to give Tennessee the 5-0 win over Indiana.
The Volunteers' success continued in the second match, downing Liberty in a 4-0 rout. Repic and Brittany Lindl got their first win of the day in doubles to begin the match. Bongart and Riley earned their second victory with a 6-1 match to give UT a 1-0 lead.
In singles, Lindl, who's ranked No. 69 in the country, earned her first singles win of the day to get things started. Hammond and Repic picked up their second wins of the doubleheader to take the match.
"This team knows exactly where their bodies need to be in order to play at a competitive level," athletic trainer Ashley Thomas said. "Even when they are not top notch, they are powering through. They are working through all types of adversity to make sure the team can get the win. All these women want is to succeed by any means necessary, and that showed today in their grit and focus on the court."
Tennessee will return to the courts next Sunday, hosting Belmont and Lipscomb for Senior Day at Goodfriend Tennis Center. Lindl and Repic will be honored 15 minutes before the Lipscomb match for their time on Rocky Top.
