KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Battling to maintain an early lead and overcome defensive miscues, Tennessee came out on top of their Wednesday night contest vs. Morehead State, 6-5, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Despite a slower start at the plate, the Volunteers combined for 12 hits on the Eagles, led by Vincent Jackson (3-for-3, 2 RBI), Benito Santiago (3-for-5, 3 RBI) and Nick Senzel (2-for-3).
Catcher Santiago got Tennessee's bats going in the second, knocking a two-run double to left center field to put the Volunteers on the board.
The middle of the order came through in the fifth and produced a three-spot for the Vols. Senior Chris Hall led off the frame with a walk and moved to third on a double to right field by Senzel. Jackson ripped a two-run single into right-center before Leno Ramirez (1-for-3, RBI) knocked an RBI-single down the right field line to make it a 5-2 Vols advantage.
A pair of defensive miscues and three base hits by the Eagles then evened the score at 5-5 in the eighth. Max Bartlett (1-for-3) led off the bottom of the inning with a double down the third base line and scored on another RBI-double delivered by Santiago to ultimately give Tennessee the go-ahead run.
Freshman Alex Harper-Cook threw 3.0 scoreless innings in his third career start, striking out two batters in what was his fourth scoreless appearance of the year.
Righthander Eric Freeman tossed 1.0 inning in relief of Harper-Cook, allowing two runs on two hits before freshman Daniel Vasquez entered in the fifth. Vasquez worked 2.1 scoreless innings, his longest relief outing of the year. UT went to Will Neely in the seventh and Jon Lipinski went on to finish the game for the win, his second with the Orange and White.
