KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Meghan Gregg hit two home runs and Rainey Gaffin threw a complete-game shutout to lead No. 13/12 Tennessee to an 8-0 run-rule victory over Tennessee Tech on Wednesday night at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
Gregg tied her career high with a pair of two-run blasts in the third and fourth innings to help lead the Vols to their 88th straight win over an in-state opponent. The Williamson, Ga., native is now tied for second on the team with eight homers this season and leads the team with 52 RBIs.
Gaffin was just as impressive in the pitcher's circle, striking out six batters and scattering five hits in five scoreless innings to improve to 9-3 on the year. She was also effective at the plate, drawing three walks and scoring a run.
The middle of UT's order, consisting of Megan Geer, Gregg and Lexi Overstreet, was the catalyst for the offense, combining to go 6-for-8 with six runs and four RBIs on the night.
The Vols went up 2-0 in the second inning after Tennessee Tech starting pitcher Hannah Weaver walked the bases loaded. Brooke Vines came through with a two-run single with two outs to score Gaffin and Scarlet McSwain.
The bats stayed hot in the third inning as Tennessee added three more runs on four hits to take a big lead. Geer led off the frame with a single and Gregg followed with her first home run of the evening, a two-run blast off the scoreboard in left-center field, to double the lead. Overstreet keep the offense rolling with her fourth triple of the year and came in to score on a double by Shaliyah Geathers to increase the Volunteers' lead to 5-0.
The duo of Geer and Gregg got things going again in the fourth inning. Geer singled up the middle with one out and Gregg followed with her second two-run bomb of the game to push the lead to seven. Geathers capped off the scoring with her second RBI of the night, driving in Overstreet with a sacrifice fly to put the Vols up 8-0.
Alyssa Richards and Gabby LaSala led the Golden Eagles' offense with two hits apiece. Weaver was stuck with the loss after giving up five runs and issuing seven walks in just 2.2 innings of work.
Tennessee wraps up its regular-season home slate with a huge SEC series against No. 3 Auburn this weekend Saturday-Monday. All three games will air on national television and as always fans can also listen live on WNML AM 990.
